Managing water demands is always on the minds of cities and towns across southern Alberta, being a semi-arid region that is prone to dry weather. The summer of 217 brought some significant hot, dry weather to Southern Alberta, and the Town of Okotoks, was required to create a plan that would help manage the water supply and demand during the summer months.
In May 218, the Town of Okotoks updated Water Bylaw 24-18 to include an updated outdoor watering schedule that balances the supply and demand requirements for water during the summer months. The new watering schedule, in effect from May 1st to October 31st annually, indicates when (day and time) watering can occur based on addresses. This schedule applies to all residential and commercial properties within the Town of Okotoks.
Looking closer at the watering schedule and bylaw, CPCIA reached out to Town of Okotoks, to clarify points specific to in ground programmable irrigation systems that weren’t included on the website.
- Large commercial and condominium properties with multi zone programmable systems may be challenged by overnight window of watering. These properties should reach out to the Water Services Manager to discuss requirements and request an exemption.
- Newly established landscape (sod or grass seed), may request an exemption from this schedule by applying for a water exemption permit
- Testing and repairs of irrigation systems are permitted at any time, no exemption permit is required.
- Drip irrigation systems are not exempt from this watering schedule. Town Administration is willing to work with companies using drip irrigation to manage their water needs.
- Rebates on select irrigation controllers and rain sensors are offered for both residential and business properties (must be professionally installed).
The Town of Okotoks is committed to water conservation and managing water demand as well as supporting residents, businesses and contractors. If you have additional questions, or would like to discuss an exemption with Town Administration, please contact the Town of Okotoks directly.
