2017 – 2018 President’s Message
It is a special honour and a privilege to begin my term as president of the Canadian Prairie Chapter of the Irrigation Association (CPCIA). Our outgoing president, Ken Vowels and the Board deserves enormous thanks from all of us for the wonderful and tireless work they have done for our association. I take this opportunity to welcome the executives and new board members and looking forward to working with this esteemed and highly professional group.
I hold a special place for the CPCIA in my professional heart. I obtained a Master of Irrigation Engineering from the Engineering University of Peshawar, Pakistan. I had the privilege of starting my career as an Irrigation Engineer 20 years ago. I have done nothing else than irrigation in my professional life.
Water Resources are limited on the globe. Only 2.5% of all the water on Earth is fresh water and more than 97% is saltwater. Out of that 2.5% of fresh water, more than two-thirds (68.7%) is frozen as snow and ice, and more than one- third is stored below ground as groundwater. This means that only 0.3% of all fresh water on the planet is readily available as surface water in lakes, swamps, rivers and streams. It is every one’s responsibility to use this precious resource wisely and efficiently.
Irrigation is the biggest user of water in the world. Estimates vary, but about 70 % of all the world’s freshwater withdrawals go towards irrigation. The CPCIA mission is to promote efficient and effective water management and be the voice of irrigation industry for the Prairie Provinces.
I, with my team will continue to promote irrigation knowledge, education, training and certification. The CPCIA will continue its efforts to expand into northern Alberta, Saskatoon, Manitoba, Yukon and Northwest territories.
I am looking forward to a very exciting 2017 for the CPCIA.
